Lumiki almost tripped when a kitten ran right in front of her path, followed by three others. “Well, my goodness! Where are you four going in such a hurry?”

She watched, hands on hips, as they made a beeline for Wade, not surprised to see that a certain white kitten was missing. Probably hanging with a cranky bear who claimed he had no use for kittens.

Lumiki chuckled, glanced around and decided things looked calm enough she could probably take a few minutes to cuddle a kitten or two. She headed for the bar where all four kittens were being given plenty of attention by another bear making the same claim.

These bears.

So completely oblivious to their downfalls.

Isana was a pure genius.

Wade looked up and grinned at Lumiki.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said, “but you’re wrong.”

Lumiki grinned and settled her arms on the bar, leaned forward and stroked a hand down the back of one of the tabbies. “Okay, I’ll bite. What am I thinking?”

“You’re thinking we’re going to end up keeping these kittens and their mama too.”

“Well. I’m pretty sure it’s a done deal where Zach and a certain white fluff ball is concerned.”

Wade looked up and let out a bark of laughter.

Lumiki glanced over her shoulder and saw Zach walking across the restaurant with the white fluff ball in question on his shoulder. She giggled and looked back at Wade. “See what I mean?”

“Yeah, I’m sure you’re right on that one.”

“And honestly, you’re looking pretty attached to those two.”

Wade looked surprised, then glanced down at the two tabbies currently purring under his hands. They were a mix of gray and brown with adorable marbled markings. “Well, I—uh.”

At that moment, one of the kittens jumped up onto Lumiki’s shoulder, startling her. “Well, hello there.” The kitten nuzzled her cheek, set its paws on her head and then set something there before jumping down.

As Lumiki reached up to touch her head, she realized one of the other kittens had done the same thing to Wade.

“What in the world?” She pulled something off her head. It looked like— “Mistletoe?” Horror widened her eyes. She lifted it to her nose. “Thank god it’s fake. Mistletoe is toxic to cats.”

Wade let out a snort. “I don’t think it’s fake.”

“What?” Lumiki gasped.

“I mean, it may be fake mistletoe, but I’m pretty certain it’s full of very real catnip.” He nodded toward the other end of the bar where the black kitten and the other tabby—this one an orange, tiger-striped one—were rolling and drooling over a mess of catnip mistletoe.

As they watched, the two tabbies joined their siblings in the rolling and drooling.
